At this time we are currently not holding any running clinics

Active Chiropractic Family Health Center offers a variety of running clinics, from beginner to marathon. Since we started offering these clinics in 2007, it is amazing how many people have learned to run for the first time, and have completed 5K, 10K and half marathon goals.

While many people think they could never be runners, it is, like many things, a learned activity. Once you become familiar with the proper technique, your breathing becomes sustainable and your ability to run increases. Whether you have never run before, or you run frequently, being part of the running clinics at Active Chiropractic Family Health Center can help you live an active lifestyle.

There are many different forms of Yoga, and the goal of all recognized forms is to improve health and well being.

Yoga is primarily known for improved balance, strength and flexibility as well as mental peace of mind. In addition, other benefits include:

 • Improved joint functioning
 • Maintains a supple spine
 • Strengthens bones
 • Increases circulation
 • Increases lymph drainage
 • Improved cardiovascular conditioning

As you participate in yoga you will notice a gradual loosening of the muscles and connective tissues. This leads to improved body alignment, posture and lessening of aches and pains. Each time you do a pose, your joints move through the full range of motion, squeezing areas of cartilage that normally aren't used. Cartilage is like a sponge, it needs to be squeezed in order to soak in fresh nutrients. Without this, areas of cartilage wear out and underlying bone may become exposed.

The discipline that regular practise builds, translates to greater self-esteem, better ability to make decisions, and greater insights into yourself.

Included in your New Member Yoga package:

(8) Weeks of Yoga Sessions 1 (2, or 3) x 1 hour or 45 minutes long classes per week.

A $50 deposit is required to reserve your spot in the session.

The Yoga classes at Active Chiropractic Family Health Centre are taught by instructors who are RYT-200 Yoga Alliance certified, have received their pre-natal certification, and are working towards their 500 level. Click here to view your trainer's bio.

Gentle Hatha

In Gentle Hatha Yoga, we will take the time to disconnect from the daily grind through mindful breathing and movement. A sequence of slow, basic asanas (yoga postures) and focused breathing will lead us into a peaceful state of being.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha is a very general term that can encompass many of the physical types of yoga. A Hatha style class is slower-paced and gentle and provides a good introduction to the basic yoga poses.

Yoga for Cancer Care

This is a class designed uniquely for people who have been diagnosed with cancer. Wherever you are in your treatment plan, this class will help you increase your quality of life. Participants have the option to stand or lie on the ground during the class or remain seated throughout. Using mindfulness, breathing, physical postures and relaxation, participants will learn tools to help toward health and healing.

Yoga: A Practice of Self Care

The benefits of yoga are legendary; you are invited to experience the truth of this for yourself.

Yin yoga tends to be slow, steady & stationary with a sense of softness; the focus is on the connective tissues in building stability and flexibility.

Yang yoga activity is more mobile and requires effort in building strength & mobility in muscles.

We need a blend of the two for optimal functioning.

Self Care - that's what it is all about!

Yoga & Meditation

First you will learn how to perform each external pose, then how to hold and to focus on the internal mental aspect of each pose. Patience is part of the experience. The second half of the class will focus on a seated meditation. Yoga is mind and body working in true harmony!

Beginner (Co-Ed)

We will introduce you to yoga step-by-step in a small group class, with explanations of the postures (asanas) and breathing exercises (pranayama), which allows for more personal one-to-one corrections. This is open to anyone who is completely new to yoga or anyone who would like to go back to the basics.

Our clinic is now an official Complete Concussion Management™ clinic. As concussions have become the focus for both professional and amateur athletes around the world, we at Active Chiropractic wanted to be at the forefront of concussion diagnosis, management, and rehabilitation. With our collaboration and education through Complete Concussion Management we now offer the very best in research-proven concussion treatments and rehabilitation.

How Can a Baseline Test Help to Keep Your Brain Safe and Healthy?

There is no X-ray or brain scan that can determine when you have received a concussion or when your brain has recovered to the point where you are safe to return to sports. The best tool we have available to ensure that you are safe to sustain another impact is to measure you at baseline (before injury) and then measure you again when we have assessed and determined that you have safely recoverd. This way we can pick up these very subtle deficits that indicate that you may not be fully recovered and are therefore vulnerable to a severe, and potentially permanent, brain injury.

No one can tell you when you have fully recovered…unless they have the data from all of these testing metrics from before you were injured. No one can see the energy levels in your brain that are affected with a concussion and research tells us you can’t rely on how you feel; you must be tested! On the other hand, perhaps what looked like a questionable impact has had no negative impact and the athlete can be cleared to return to sport, play, practice and school.

Concussion Management and Return to Learn

Did you know that we offer Trainer courses? Call to find out more information!

p: (613) 732-9215

Education is Key

We offer a 2 hour course where you will learn a variety of important information regarding concussion management, such as:

 • What is a concussion?
 • Signs/symptoms of a concussion
 • On ice care and emergency situations
 • Baseline testing
 • Your role as a trainer in an athlete’s Return to Play
 • And so much more!
 • Click here for a video overview of our program!

Athlete's Safety

The course is an information packed 2 hours with lots of time for any questions you may have. You will also learn more about what it is that we do in terms of testing here at the clinic and why these tests play an important role in your athletes' safety.

Trainers Manual

In this course you will be provided with a trainer manual upon arrival to the clinic. The trainer manual covers everything taught in the class and can be used as a reference later on in case of emergencies.

On course day be sure to bring a writing utensil, a few blank sheets of paper and a clipboard (or possibly a tablet) to write extra notes on. You may wish to dress comfortably and bring a sweater in case the gym is cold as we will be sitting for the majority of the course.

Not Just a Bump On The Head!

We need to get away from simply viewing concussions as a ‘bump on the head’ or ‘getting your bell rung’ or getting a ‘ding’. These are brain injuries and without the proper care and management, they can be quite devastating. Our course is meant to educate those who will be on the front lines when these injuries happen so that you, as trainers and/or coaches, will be better educated to deal with the injury properly and safely.

<![CDATA[What is Baseline Testing?]]>https://active-chiropractic.cms-capstone.com/services/concussions/what-is-baseline-testing/https://active-chiropractic.cms-capstone.com/services/concussions/what-is-baseline-testing/Thu, 29 Apr 2021 3:08:31 +0000Baseline Testing:

The Biggest Concern

The biggest concern surrounding concussions comes from the energy deficit that occurs in the brain following injury. When the brain is in this low energy state, it has been well established that the brain is extremely vulnerable to additional trauma, where even smaller impacts can lead to another concussion; and these second concussions can cause severe brain injuries with potentially permanent or fatal outcomes.

The Problem

The problem is that symptoms (meaning how someone feels) do not coincide with brain recovery. The only way to know when the brain has fully recovered and out of this “vulnerable period” is to compare current brain function to when the individual was healthy; this is what is known as a “baseline test”.

The Battery of Tests

A baseline test is a battery of tests that measures every area of brain function that could potentially become affected following a concussion (you need more than computer tests!!). The reason that the test is termed a “baseline” is because it is done BEFORE the athlete gets injured. In order to know when an athlete has fully recovered, we first have to know where they were when they were healthy. Without having this information, there is no way to truly know when an athlete has fully recovered and is safe to return to their sport.

What is included in my BLT?

 • Access to assessment and treatment within 24-48hrs of a concussion at any one of CCMI's 130 certified clinics nation wide.
 • a bag tag which identifies you and your baseline results to CCMI certified clinics and trainers for efficient communication, proper injury reporting, and effective injury management between your healthcare providers and team coaches and trainers
 • Free App where you can compare your baseline stats to other athletes your age and monitor any rehab progress

Don't forget about annual follow-ups!

Baseline testing is the most important thing to get done prior to the beginning your sports season and updated on a yearly basis. Research recommends follow-ups each year for valid comparisons if an athlete does receive a blow to the head.

Rest - First and Foremost

In the immediate post-injury phase, the only treatment for concussion is rest. A Concussion is essentially an energy deficit inside the brain, complete with imbalances and blood flow abnormalities.

Rest has two very important features when it comes to concussions.

 • First, it keeps the individual from putting themselves in harm's way, thereby avoiding a devastating second injury, until they have sufficiently recovered.
 • Second, rest allows the individual to get a jump-start on their recovery so that any and all energy that is being produced is allocated to attempting to regain the current deficit.

Secondly

The next stages of rehabilitation from a concussion injury involve a gradual return first to cognitive activity (Learn) and then a gradual increase in physical activity (Play) with each stage separated by a period of at least 24 hours.

The individual must have no symptoms at any one of the stages in order to be progressed to the next stage. If symptoms are encountered, this is indication of not being ready for the complexity of the task, and the athlete should drop back to the previous stage for a 24-hour period before attempting the next stage again.

We monitor these steps very closely to ensure a safe and effective integration back to normal activities and life!

Testing

Here at Active Chiropractic we complete a variety of post-concussion physical fitness stress tests once the athlete has successfully accomplished the desired stage of rehabilitation. These tests are monitored and administered by trained health professionals to ensure safety is the number one concern and optimal results are obtained. Results from these tests determine whether the athlete is ready to return to play.

A disruption in neurological functioning following a significant impact to the head or elsewhere on the body resulting in extreme acceleration or deceleration of the brain within the skull.

This causes a biochemical imbalance within brain cells as well as decreased blood flow and temporary energy deficits within the brain.

Following a suspected concussion, a player should be immediately removed from play, assessed and placed on complete rest in order to recover from the energy deficit. Studies have shown that any activity, both mental and physical, in the immediate days following a concussion can delay the process of recovery and should be avoided until the athlete is completely symptom free.

Sport-related concussions are the most common neurological injury
that occurs in all levels of athletic participation. Concussions may actually go un-diagnosed, as they do not always display outward or obvious signs and many athletes are unaware of either the symptoms or the dangers of playing with a concussion. Inappropriate management of a concussion can lead to increased risk of subsequent, more severe and potentially permanent, or even fatal, brain injury.

How are Concussions diagnosed?
Unfortunately, there is no scan, MRI, or X-ray that can detect a concussion. The major problem with concussions is that symptoms, meaning how someone feels, does not coincide with the energy levels in the brain. Most people feel better long before their brain has actually recovered to the point that they are actually safe to return to their sport. This is where the benefits of baseline testing come in as the most important step towards proper concussion management. For more information on baseline testing, please click here.

What do I do if I think I have a Concussion?
Following a concussion injury, the first 24-48 hours are the most crucial, click here to read more.

<![CDATA[What are the Do's and Don'ts of a Concussion?]]>https://active-chiropractic.cms-capstone.com/services/concussions/what-are-the-do-s-and-don-ts-of-a-concussion/https://active-chiropractic.cms-capstone.com/services/concussions/what-are-the-do-s-and-don-ts-of-a-concussion/Thu, 29 Apr 2021 12:36:23 +0000What are the Do's and Don'ts of Concussion?
 1. DON’T give any medication! This may mask the signs of a worsening condition and may increase the risk of bleeding in the brain.
 2. Rest is important for recovery, however DON’T allow the athlete to go to sleep for at least 3 hours after injury – this is to monitor for signs of a worsening condition. The injured person will likely be tired and want to sleep but converse with them to make sure they are speaking coherently, not slurring their words and not repeating the same questions over and over.
 3. DO periodically stand them up and have them close their eyes with their feet together to check for signs of balance problems. If they are getting worse, take them to the emergency department for evaluation.
 4. For the first night following the injury, DO wake the injured athlete every 2 hours to check for responsiveness. Make sure that they are easily awoken and that they know where they are.
 5. DO make an appointment for a full evaluation within 2-days of the injury. It is preferable that the appointment be made for the very next day.

Following a concussion injury, the first 24-48 hours are the most crucial, due to the potential for a more serious underlying injury that may require immediate medical attention such as a bleed or swelling in the brain. These are signs of potentially serious or life-threatening conditions and require immediate medical attention at the nearest emergency department:

 • Severe or worsening headache
 • Very drowsy or can’t be woken up
 • Vomiting
 • Drug or alcohol intoxication at time of injury
 • Deficits in short-term memory (can’t remember things that just happened, repeating the same questions over and over)
 • Seizure
 • Decreasing level of consciousness or awareness (can’t recognize people or places)
 • Fluid or blood coming from ears, nose, mouth, or eyes
 • Bruising behind ears, black eyes, very tender points on face
 • Inability to remember events 30 minutes before and leading up to the injury or 30 minutes after the injury
 • Unsteady on their feet
 • Slurring of speech
 • Weakness or numbness in the arms or legs
 • Dangerous mechanism of injury such as being struck by a motor vehicle, being ejected from a motor vehicle, or a fall from more than 3 feet or 5 stairs

A concussion is a complex process affecting the brain induced by biomechanical forces. These forces that are referred to are acceleration or impulse forces delivered to the brain. It is often thought that there has to be a loss of consciousness but his is Not necessarily true – over 90% of concussions DO NOT result in a loss of consciousness. Concussions cause a temporary dysfunction in the involved nerves, where they don’t work properly for a period of time and the brain cell disturbance causes the brain cells to discharge uncontrollably which may cause any one, or more, of the following signs or symptoms:

Headache

Pressure in the head

Neck pain

Nausea or vomiting

Dizziness

Blurred vision

Balance problems

Sensitivity to light

Sensitivity to noise

Feeling slowed down

Feeling of “fogginess”

Not feeling right or feeling off

Difficulty concentrating

Difficulty remembering

Fatigue or low energy

Confusion

Drowsiness

Trouble falling asleep

More emotional Irritability

Sadness

There is a high suspicion of a concussion injury:

if someone is experiencing any of the symptoms above following a significant hit or blow to the head or body. The common misconception is that you must be hit in the head to cause a concussion injury – this is not true! Because a concussion is the result acceleration or deceleration of the brain, a concussion can happen with a significant blow to anywhere on the body, provided sufficient acceleration/deceleration is transmitted to the brain tissue. These injuries can actually be quite devastating if they are not managed properly. However, if managed properly, concussions are completely recoverable in most cases.

MRI and CAT scans do not show signs of a concussion,
so a baseline test is used to evaluate the brain. What is a Baseline Test?

Concussion Evaluation and Management

It is important that concussed patients receive a proper neurological evaluation as well as proper management advice as soon as possible following injury, as this has a significant impact on their recovery. Please make an appointment with your nearest Complete Concussion Management™ clinic within 24-48 hours of the injury taking place. To find the nearest CCMI clinic, please click here.

What Is Kinesiology?

Kinesiology is the science of human movement. Kinesiologists apply evidenced-based research to improve function, health and wellness of people. As university trained health professionals, Kinesiologists apply the principles of biomechanics, anatomy, physiology and psychomotor behaviour to improve health, function and performance for people, and encourage preventative activity such as: physical activity, workplace health and safety, injury prevention, injury management, chronic disease and the overall improvement of health.

Prevention

Kinesiologists are leaders in the prevention of injury and chronic disease. Most Canadians would be surprised at the link between proper physical activity and health improvements. For example, physical activity reduces the risk of death from coronary heart disease and it significantly reduces the risk of developing diabetes, hypertension, and colon cancer. Physical activity enhances mental health and improves muscles, bones and joints which combine to maintain function and preserve independent living.

Management

Kinesiologists use exercise in the management of injury and chronic disease. While the best way to manage injury or disease is through prevention, Kinesiologists are more often on the front-lines in restoring client health when injury occurs.

Performance

Kinesiologists are devoted to improving performance, health, and overall quality of life. Nearly every Canadian can improve their performance, function and well-being across mental and physical parameters, through improved movement and exercise. Kinesiologists work with people of all ages and every level of function and physical ability to assess, track, manage and achieve a broad range of personal health goals.

Follow this link for more information on Exercise and Stretching benefits.

Kinesiology Insurance Coverage:

Visits with our Registered Kinesiologist can be covered under your chiropractic benefits (if you see both Dr. Elizabeth and Rachel) as the visits will be directed by Dr. Elizabeth Radley-Walters. Alternatively, they can be covered under Registered Kinesiology benefits as some plans have coverage for this:

SunLife - covers $300 per calendar year for massage/kinesiology treatments
GreatWestLife - depends on the plan itself and what you have for your health benefits
Manulife - Kinesiology treatments can be added to your plan for an additional cost

Other insurance companies require members to consult their policy or ask their insurance professional if their coverage includes Kinesiology treatment.

Kinesiology Services: (All services are overseen by the Doctor of Chiropractic)

Chiropractic Stretches/Exercises

Amanda works alongside Dr. Elizabeth Radley-Walters and is the clinic’s Kinesiologist. Doctors of Chiropractic practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling. Here at Active Chiropractic we want you to get the most out of your experience and overall health care. With dual health care from the Chiropractor and Kinesiologist you will be assured to get just that! Dr. Elizabeth will ensure that you get your full treatment of chiropractic adjustments along with myofascial release and then you may or may not (depending on your current condition) be directed to Amanda to be given corrective stretches and exercises to enhance your recovery and promote proper posture. Rachel will consult with Dr. Elizabeth on the very best and most beneficial course of action for each and every patient in terms of their stretching and/or exercise program.

Functional Movement Systems (FMS)

This is a screening system that we use here at Active Chiropractic Family Health Center as a means to test patients/clients basic functional movement patterns. This exercise philosophy and corresponding set of resources is based on sound science, years of innovation, and current research. Making this an even more valuable tool, is the fact that FMS allows professionals to assess movement patterns in a “healthy” population, not only individuals with an injury or pathology. A personalized stretching and exercise program will be prescribed to help decrease risk of future injury and promote functional capacity.

Electromyography (EMG)

EMG stands for ‘Electromyography’; and it is a training program that uses your muscle biofeedback to treat muscle dysfunction. You will be able to visually see what your muscles are doing and be able to correct a movement pattern that you may be doing incorrectly which will help with your rehabilitation and improve your movement efficiency. Ensure you do your exercises correctly and reduce your pain through EMG treatments!

Microcurrent & TENS Treatments

Did you know that along with our Electromyography (EMG) treatments, we offer Microcurrent and TENS treatments as well? This is a great addition to our services as it offers you the opportunity to heal faster! If you are currently dealing with an acute injury, muscle cramping/ spasms, or chronic inflammation, then Microcurrent or TENS may work for you! Benefits from using microcurrent or TENS may include:

 • Can help speed the healing process
 • Reduces swelling and inflammation
 • Masks acute and chronic pain
 • Releases muscle trigger points
 • Improves soft tissue regeneration
 • Gait Assessments

Gait assessments are a great service for active individuals as well as those who are looking to learn more about their current posture, functional movement ability, walking dynamics and how to improve mobility and stability. We look at a wide range of motor programming systems that relate to human gait and analyze them so that you understand what we are talking about! In addition to this, we use advanced computer programming to illustrate various aspects of your foot dimensions dynamically, statically and posturally. Corrective stretches and exercises are also prescribed to help improve movement efficiency!

Custom Orthotics

Along with our gait assessments, we offer custom orthotics! A custom orthotic is a device designed to align the foot and ankle into the most anatomically efficient position. They look like insoles, but are biomechanical medical appliances that are custom made to correct your specific foot imbalance. Custom orthotics will reduce stress and strain on your body by bringing your feet back into proper alignment. Custom orthotics may be covered through your extended health care. Our orthotics are made from a three-dimensional cast of your feet along with advanced computer programming to get a very accurate analysis of your feet dynamics and structure. Please check into your insurance coverage to see if orthotics can be covered for you!

Core Assessments

Core assessments are a great tool to assess abdominal musculature and its biomechanical relationship to the entire kinetic chain, when applied to the prevention of back pain, maintenance of good posture and optimal sports performance. Faulty abdominal training can create postural problems and it's important to learn how to reestablish activation of the abdominal and understand why core coordination and strength tests are essential for both orthopedic patients experiencing such issues as low back pain and competitive athletes. Exercises are prescribed that are suitable for the post-rehabilitation patient all the way to performance enhancing techniques for the amateur and elite athletes.

Cancer Survivor Exercise Sessions

In the last couple of decades, considerable progress has been made in diagnosing certain cancers earlier and treating many cancers more effectively. During this time physical activity has emerged as an important modifiable health behaviour that also plays a key role in both the prevention and treatment of certain cancers. Maintaining a minimum base level of fitness will help keep you strong during treatments and rebound quicker during recovery periods. Also, because it is safe and easy to implement, more clinicians and oncologists than ever before are recommending that their patients exercise! Here at Active Chiropractic Family Health Centre we offer affordable half hour exercise sessions or 1 hour Cancer Survivor Exercise Classes two times a week! Read our information sheet or check out our latest brochure for more info!

Knowing how and what to eat in order to maintain good health or being to achieve it are important considerations.

Some food labels can be difficult to decipher - is low fat better than low calories? Is high sodium worse that high carbohydrates? Do you really have to drink eight glasses of water a day? These are questions that lead us into an anxious state about our eating habits, and this is where a Registered Dietician can help.

Nutrition counseling with a registered dietician can assist with these health conditions: diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, anemia, obesity and eating disorders. Nutritional counseling can also be helpful to people looking for guidance in weight loss or weight gain, wanting to improve energy levels and planning healthy meals and snacks.

Dietician services are available to children, teens and adults to promote positive food choices and healthy living.

There are more than 5,000 practicing Chiropractors in Canada. Approximately four and a half million Canadians use the services of a chiropractor each year. Chiropractic is a regulated health profession.

Chiropractic spinal manipulation (commonly referred to as a chiropractic adjustment) is a drug-free, non-invasive manual procedure with a primary goal to treat areas of decreased movement in the joints of the body, particularly the spine, which can create a reaction in surrounding tissues (ligaments, muscles and nerves) resulting in pain, dysfunction and muscular spasm. Chiropractors assess disorders related to the spine, nervous system, and joints of the extremities and provide diagnosis, treatment and management of those disorders. Chiropractors are also trained to prescribe therapeutic exercise and other non-invasive therapies including nutritional counseling.

Spinal manipulation, as practiced by trained chiropractors, is a highly controlled procedure, which rarely causes discomfort. The chiropractor adapts the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient. Patients often note positive changes in their symptoms immediately following treatment.

The vast majority of patients who seek chiropractic care do so for complaints of the musculoskeletal system, most often for conditions affecting the spine. Scientific study of spinal adjustment has clearly demonstrated that chiropractic treatment improves function and is effective for common conditions such as headache, and neck and back pain.

In many cases, such as acute lower back pain, chiropractic care may be the primary method of treatment. Where other medical conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal aspects of discomfort associated with the condition. Chiropractic care may also be palliative, providing symptomatic relief to patients with chronic conditions.

Active Release Technique (ART)

Active Release Technique is the gold standard in soft tissue treatment. It assists with repetitive strain and sports injuries. It can also assist with treatment of cumulative trauma disorders.

ART is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles , tendons , ligaments , fascia and nerves. ART assists with the following common discomforts: headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fascitis, knee problems and tennis elbow. These conditions are often the result of overused muscles.

For more information on ART, please click here for our information sheet.

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Bootcamp Program

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis is a common condition that is usually caused by a wear and tear type of arthritis of the spine. This can lead to a decrease in the space for the spinal nerves that travel from the spine to the lower back and legs. As the space for the nerves gets smaller, this can lead to increased pressure on these nerves.

We are happy to now offer a 6 week Bootcamp program where the primary focus of the program is improving function especially with regards to your standing and walking ability. The secondary goal will be pain reduction.

For more information on this program, you can visit https://www.spinemobility.com/boot-camp-for-degenerative-lumbar-s

May 27, 2020

Good Afternoon Active Chiropractic FHC community!

Yesterday the Ministry of Health along with the College of Chiropractors of Ontario announced that, after approximately 2 1/2 months in which health professionals were limited to providing urgent/emergency and telehealth services ONLY to patients, it has amended Directive #2 to allow for “all deferred and non-essential and elective services carried out by Health Care Providers” to be gradually restarted. However, this is NOT back to business as usual. At this time a few processes need to be in place AND need to be continually followed by patients and staff for a safe re-open:

⭐️ we have worked diligently on our return to work practice policies which is in alignment with the Ministry of Health and our respective practitioner Colleges;
⭐️ we have completed and updated our return to practice guidelines and have been practicing them successfully with our emergency patients over the past 2.5 months and will be sharing them with ALL of our patients.

We are excited to welcome everyone back who requires an in-person appointment. Please note that if you are concerned about returning to the clinic but have pain, Telehealth remains an effective alternative that we are continuing to offer to help you. We ask you at this time to please be patient with us. We are adjusting a few appointment times that have already been scheduled (to allow for more time between patients) and have a firm re-open date this Thursday May 28, 2020. We will have someone answering the phone today from 12-6:30pm and then daily Monday to Friday 7:30am-4:30pm for the time being. Enjoy the lovely spring weather but remember physical distancing guidelines (2 metres apart).

See you all soon!

Clinic update: COVID-19

We regret to inform you that our clinic will remain closed through to May 19 or until Provincial Emergency Declarations are lifted. However, we are still seeing emergency visits on a case by case basis.

We are in the process of calling to cancel all appointments previously scheduled during this time. If you have appointments booked before May 19, your appointments will remain in the allotted time slot until we make contact with you regarding cancelling, rescheduling or adding you to our list to be recalled once we are back to providing normal service. This is our way of keeping track and also ensuring that all of our patients are doing as well as the circumstances permit. If you do not have an acute or emergent condition, please feel free to reach out to us to cancel or reschedule your upcoming scheduled appointment by contacting our office (613-732-9215 or info@active-chiropractic.org). Please note that this is a time-consuming process and we are doing our best to reach you all in a timely manner.

We recognize that these times may be exacerbating your pains. We realize that some of you were left in the middle of a treatment plan when the Provincial Emergency Declarations mandated that we close our doors to most patients. Some of you may be feeling new and/or old pains on top of stress and anxiety. We understand and we want you to know that we care about you and that you are not alone. Please reach out to us so we can have a conversation and give you some ideas on how to self treat during this time. Just because the clinic is closed, does not mean you have nowhere to turn to for assistance. We remain here to help care for you. If you run into times where you feel you need help, we are available for emergency visits or can arrange a Telehealth consult to discuss any issues you are currently having. We can consider your condition and review or modify your stretches and exercises already prescribed to you or add different suggestions to help you to feel well.

We will continue to keep you up to date on our plans (via our website, social media, and our voice message) and we will keep you informed when we will reopen.

Thank you for your patience during these unusual times.

Your Active Chiropractic Family Health Centre Team

March 24, 2020

To our valued patients,

The health and safety of our patients, staff and practitioners is our top priority. This is a critical moment across Ontario and rules and regulations are unfolding at a rapid rate as they relate to the COVID-19 virus.

In compliance with Provincial and Chiropractic College recommendations, we will be closing our clinic effective March 24, 2020, until April 23, 2020 (update with recent Provincial Emergency Measures).

As health care professionals who provide emergency care within the province, we will only be seeing patients who require emergency care (on a case-by-case basis) during this period. All of our patient visits have been cancelled from March 24-April 23 and rescheduled to a later date. If you experience an emergent condition during this time, please contact the office by phone (613-732-9215) or by email (info@active-chiropractic.org) and we will connect with you to discuss your needs and arrange a time for an appointment. We will continue to follow Government guidelines and, at this time, we are planning to resume regular clinic hours and treatments on Friday, April 24th, 2020; however, please continue to check our voice message, website, or social media for further updates or changes.

We hope that the socially responsible actions we are all taking now will help Ontario to flatten the curve, reduce the load on our health care system, and create better outcomes for Ontarians requiring medical assistance.

We would like to personally thank you for your continued support and patience as we navigate this difficult and exceptional situation, which is affecting all our lives in ways we never thought possible. We all look forward to the day when life will return to a more normal rhythm.

Sincerely,

Dr Elizabeth Radley-Walters and the Active Chiropractic Team

March 18, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to move at a rapid pace. We will regularly update our website, social media, and voice answering(613-732-9215) with the latest news from our clinic. We hope our efforts to keep you informed will help alleviate at least part of this stressful situation for you and your families.

We are complying with our Provincial Public Health recommendations by:

- Suspending all non-essential chiropractic services (except for emergency/acute conditions) as a matter of utmost public interest and safety for our patients.

If you do not have an acute or emergent condition, please cancel your upcoming scheduled appointment with us by contacting our office (613-732-9215 or info@active-chiropractic.org). We can reschedule your appointment to a later date or add you to our list to call when we resume regular practices. If you are unsure if your condition qualifies for continued treatment, please call our office and we would be happy to answer your questions.

We ask that patients who are not scheduled for an appointment please call or email the clinic only.

Please see the notes below if you are planning on attending a scheduled appointment in the next 2 weeks and likley into the foreseeable future.

- Suspending all BootCamp and Yoga classes indefinitely.

All class packages and individual classes sold for the Early-Spring Session that was scheduled to begin March 23, 2020 will be placed on hold and ready for you to use, once it is safe for us to welcome you back to our classes.

As always, please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns and we will do our best to respond in a timely manner.

Working together we can help one another navigate through this challenging time.

For Patients planning on attending an appointment:

If you feel you do require your appointment due to its acute or emergent nature, please note we are actively screening our patients coming into the office:

- Do you have a FEVER and/or NEW ONSET OF COUGH or DIFFICULTY BREATHING?

- Have you just returned from international travel within the last two weeks?

- Have you had any close contact with a confirmed or probable case of COVID-19?

- Have you had close contact with a person with an acute respiratory illness who has been to an impacted area?

If you answer ‘Yes” to any of these questions above, you will need to call or email to reschedule your appointment (likely for a period beyond 14 days). We kindly ask that all patients still continue to do their best to contact us in a timely manner if their status or personal/public safety requires you to cancel an appointment.

For those patients attending the office please note that we are practising social distancing at all times and in all environments where it is feasible:

- We will be staggering appointments that do occur so there will be no/limited use of waiting rooms and entrance areas. It is possible that your appointment time may be altered slightly to accommodate this new strategy for scheduling appointments.

- Enhanced cleaning and sanitizing of 'touch surfaces' such as our POS machine and doorknobs in between each patient.

- We have also removed all 'soft' items that cannot be cleaned effectively (books, magazines, plush toys etc.) from the clinic.

As always in our clinic:

- You can find hand sanitizer and kleenex in each room of our facility.

- We always wipe down our treatment area and instruments between each patient's use, in addition to practitioner hand wash between patients.

- Our washroom facility is always at your disposal.

Active Chiropractic has been a big part of my life for the better part of four years. I have been lucky enough to have discovered the pain and pleasure of Dr Elizabeth’s chiropractic work that kept me both working and running. I am certain both of those would not have been possible without her. She has always been so knowledgeable and professional. Dr. Elizabeth is always patient understanding and willing to help you be the best you can be. As I move on to Calgary it’s with a very heavy heart as I know she is going to be so hard to replace. Even though she has helped by providing me with a detailed list of Chiropractors to check out. They have big shoes to fill!

BodySculpt Bootcamp became my time that was always just for me. I chose to do this class three times a week. It starts your day off with a bang and if you end your day with a glass of wine well there is no guilt because you already worked out. The classes are designed to both challenge you and keep you within your own limits. The instructors are all so well trained and are so motivational they will push you to your limits and not beyond. If one us had an injury they are quick to adjust and change any part of their class. No matter who teaches the class they watch your form and technique and correct us so we don’t injure ourselves but if something gets tweaked we had a whole team available to assist us and get us back on course! Along with the physical benefits of being stronger and leaner which came with each class so did friendships. Class dynamics are always changing so with each season so did friendships. People came and went but the regulars were always there and that was a huge part of the fun. Laughing and catching up during the stretches and warm up, challenging each other during the class made every class a blast.

I have really enjoyed the program. Elizabeth’s inspiration and encouragement was exactly what I needed. After two months, I reduced my measurements beyond by expectation, feel absolutely great and don’t want to stop!

Vikki Benner

I have been an ongoing member of Active Chiropractic for approximately one year. I attend the BodySculpt BootCamp twice a week as well as Hatha Yoga once a week. I have been noticing a very positive change in my strength, ability and flexibility! I have also recently made changes to my dietary intake. I used to eat a lot of breads. I would have toast every single morning and a sandwich almost every day, and I thought all was good! I decided to make changes to my eating habits because I was feeling as though I could better myself. I now have a bowl of oatmeal and a poached egg for breakfast. To my oatmeal I will add hemp hearts, ground flax seed, dried cranberries and sunflower seeds. I rarely consume bread anymore and by incorporating a balanced healthy diet and healthy choices throughout the day I have far more energy and am feeling great! I have also noticed changes in my body since modifying my eating habits. I have developed more muscle definition for all my major muscle groups, my belly is flatter, my smile is beaming and my energy is infectious! I like to follow a clean eating diet and the book I loaned out from the clinic called the Eat Clean Diet from Tosca Reno provided many helpful hints. The support, guidance and encouragement from the staff at Active Chiropractic are invaluable to me.

Brenda Joliceur

I had been participating in Active Chiropractic’s BootCamp since 2008 and was feeling very happy about my fitness. I generally take the summer off from classes, so three years ago (July 2010) I challenged myself to get running. My goal was to run 5 km without stopping, which I did after five weeks of lacing up my shoes and hitting the road. After that accomplishment, I had a goal of running 10 km, which I did that September. That was the beginning of using "ten and ones", which I continue to use on long runs. With my return to the twice weekly Fit Mom BootCamp classes and winter coming I chose to continue running and Elizabeth gave me advice on winter running gear. When I signed up for the Ottawa Race Weekend Half Marathon she encouraged my effort and suggested specific exercises. I finished the May 2011 race in 1:56:36. That fall I ran the Army Run half marathon in 1:53:49. Again with fall schedules and winter coming I chose to continue both BootCamp and running and decided on the Ottawa Race Weekend Marathon in 2012, which I finished with a time of 3:50:21 qualifying me to run in the Boston Marathon April 2013. I finished the Boston Marathon with a time of 3:53:39 which re-qualifies me for the 2014 Boston Marathon.

I have been participating in Active Chiropractic’s 5/10K run clinics. I first started out by wanting to learn more about running and how I could improve my form and breathing and decrease my knee pain. I took part in the 5K Run Clinic every Tuesday evening during the summer. Elizabeth got me hooked! I started to achieve goals and feel great. My energy levels increased and my endurance started to improve. I looked forward to each week and I appreciated the talks that were included in the clinic where Elizabeth taught us many things ranging from strength training, joint mobility, safety, race prep and so much more! I learned proper breathing techniques that increased my stamina and improved my running time and I become a more knowledgeable and confident runner.

I set my sights on the 5K (Turkey Trot) and I was so pleased with the attention Elizabeth gave to creating individualized running schedules for me and the other runners. We all were at different levels and it was nice to have a custom program tailored to my abilities and goals. When I ran into an injury I was afraid that my goals were no longer in sight, but having a chiropractor as a run instructor helped me get back on track in no time! I am happy to say that I accomplished my 5K goal and with a personal best and did it ever feel great! During the 5 km Turkey Trot although I pulled a calf muscle at the 2 km mark I still managed to finish the race with my best time and came in second in my age group. This was thanks to Elizabeth’s training and inspiration.

I now am setting my goals on training for a 10K in the New Year. I can’t say enough about the running program offered here. Dr. Elizabeth understands human movement to the utmost and it’s nice to know that if I get injured I have a doctor there to help me regain my full running ability back safely and effectively! Elizabeth teaches us corrective stretches and exercise to help improve our running gait and efficiency and decrease our risk of injury which I find to be very valuable. I would recommend Active Chiropractic to any aspiring individual looking to become more healthy and active. I wish I could help everyone reap the health benefits I have discovered, but the only way I can do this is by encouraging others to join the Active Chiropractic members!! Thank you very much Active Chiropractic, you have changed my life.

I joined BodySculpt BootCamp a few years ago. I knew I had to become more active in order to lead a long and healthy life. My left leg and hip had ached for a few years. I thought it would never go away! After a few months of coming to the clinic to take part in the unique BootCamp classes offered here, the ache in my leg and hip were gone! I now combine BootCamp, chiropractic care and massage to help keep me fit, happy and feeling great. It’s so convenient that I can get all of these services in one place! The BootCamp consultations are very thorough and I appreciate the time that my trainer takes to understand my movement fully. The classes are small which means I get a lot of personal attention from my instructor, along with encouragement during every class! Front line safety is amazing as proper form and posture is of utmost importance and it’s great that the Active Chiropractic team is always there to accommodate any change in my schedule even at the last minute!

When I heard that Active Chiropractic Family Health Centre was offering Cancer Survivor Classes I was thrilled. I knew that I needed to increase the activity level in my life. Oncologists highly recommend exercise to their patients, but I just never knew where to take the first steps. I used to participate in the BodySculpt BootCamp classes at Active Chiropractic, but had to discontinue. When I heard about the Cancer Survivor Exercise classes I jumped at the opportunity and haven’t looked back. At first I could barely step onto a small step without almost falling over, now I can step on the BOSU ball with confidence! I feel and look great and am so happy with my newfound health and energy. Attention is given to improving my mobility, stability, balance and functional capacity. The extended warm-up ensures that we are ready to exercise without getting injured. Attention is given to each individual and modifications are given when necessary to ensure everyone is successful! My strength, balance and mobility are all improving. I feel so proud of myself after each and every class and my instructor is patient, knowledgeable, and so encouraging. She always makes sure that we are comfortable and our health and safety comes first and foremost. I highly recommend this program to all cancer survivors, whether currently on treatment or pre/post treatment. We can all benefit from more exercise in our lives and Rachel has helped me to affirm my capabilities.

After being diagnosed with and treated for cancer my fitness, endurance and confidence in my body's abilities were at an all time low. I wanted to start exercising again but needed the right program. The Cancer Survivors Exercise Class at Active Chiropractic has been just right for me. It is a small committed group (maximum of 8 participants) which allows the trainer to focus on each individual and modify as needed. Because we are all at different stages in our recovery we all work at our own pace but Rachel (the instructor) is a great motivator. She is enthusiastic and our classes are fun! Since starting this program my energy, core strength, endurance and sense of well being have all improved immeasurably. Oncologists usually recommend returning to an active lifestyle and this program has been perfect for me.

I think it's important to let business owners aware when they have wonderful employees. I have struggled making a commitment to any form of exercise and decided to give boot camp classes a shot back in September. It's the only form of exercise I have been able to make a true commitment to. My commitment is due to Rachel, she is an incredibly patient young lady. When I felt like I had two lefts of everything Rachel was so encouraging and so patient with me. She has taught me the correct way to do things (exercises) even if she has to tell me 10 times during a class. Two thumbs up to Rachel....I will be registering for my third round!
